What is the best way to install a screen window?

Measure your window opening accurately

Getting the measurements right is the most important part of installing any screen window. Even a tiny mistake can leave you with a screen that does not fit properly. Use a measuring tape to check the height and width of the window opening. Measure from the inside edges of the frame, not the outside. Take three measurements for the width and three for the height, one on the left side, one in the middle, and one on the right side. This helps account for windows that are not perfectly square. Use the smallest measurement as your guide to ensure a snug fit. Write everything down so you do not forget.

Pick the right materials for your screen

Choosing the right mesh and frame material makes a big difference in how long your screen window lasts. Fiberglass mesh is the most common choice because it does not rust or dent and it is very affordable. It also does not crease easily, which makes installation easier for beginners. Aluminum mesh is stronger and more resistant to damage, but it can bend and leave permanent marks if you are not careful. For the frame, aluminum is lightweight and sturdy. Stay away from cheap plastic frames that warp in the sun. Spending a little extra on quality materials saves you from replacing the screen again next year.

Assemble the frame carefully

Take your frame pieces and lay them out on a flat surface. Connect the corners using the corner connectors that came with your kit. Push them together firmly until you hear a click or feel them lock into place. Check that the frame is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner. The two diagonal measurements should be very close to equal. If they are not, the frame is twisted. A twisted frame will not sit flat in the window and will leave gaps. Adjust the corners until the frame sits flat and square on the table before moving on to the next step.

Stretch the mesh tight when inserting the spline

Lay your frame on top of the screen mesh with the grooved side facing up. Cut the mesh so it extends at least an inch beyond the frame on every side. Starting at one corner, use a spline roller to press the rubber spline into the groove. Hold the mesh taut with your free hand as you work. If the mesh is loose or wrinkled, the whole thing looks bad and bugs can sneak in. Go slowly around the entire frame. After you have pressed the spline all the way in, take a utility knife and trim away the extra mesh right along the outside edge of the frame. Be careful not to cut the spline or the mesh inside the groove.

Install the screen into the window frame

Once your screen is fully assembled, it is time to put it in the window. Most screens simply push into place and snap into the window frame. Start by inserting the top edge of the screen into the top track of the window. Then gently push the bottom edge in until you hear it click into the bottom track. If your window has clips or fasteners, make sure they are engaged. Give the screen a gentle tug to make sure it is secure. If it feels loose or falls out easily, check that the frame is the right size and that the clips are working properly. A properly installed screen window should stay put on its own.
